The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 “Faith” Review

The Wolf Among Us is TellTale Games latest release based on Vertigo and Bill Willingham’s award winning Fables comic series – The Wolf Among Us., also known for their hit series The Walking Dead last year.  The Wolf Among Us takes place in New York City, 20 years before the events of the comic series, you are introduced to the main narrative premise seeing many fairy tale creatures that we all grew up with like Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Little Red Riding Hood, and of course the Big Bad Wolf. All living alongside humans known as The Mundane according to the Fables.

You get to play as the Sheriff of Fabletown, Bigby Wolf, better known  as the Big Bad Wolf that every fable fears. His job is to make sure the Mundane don’t know the Fables exist but also keep peace between the Fables. Something bad happened that drove everyone out of their homes and forced them to live with the Mundanes. Something not yet made clear as to what happen. The Fables all live in a place called Fabletown somewhere in New York City, and they wear disguises called Glamours. Some sort of magic that is used to hide them in plain sight. Those who can’t hide in plain sight are found on the Farm, a location in upstate New York that repels any non-Fables.

Unique Art Style

One of the most unique art styled drawings I have ever seen, it is almost like watching a live comic book. They took what is similar in the Walking Dead and refined it to make the animations, the emotions, and story comes alive and overall a better experience.

Choices and Consequences

Throughout the first episode, you are constantly given the choice at making a decision, whether it be how to respond to another Fable, choose to act tough or be sensitive in that matter. When you get the options to start off with violence and hit the guy, or calm down and win points towards that character. TellTale games did state that each choice has a consequence from the beginning such as telling the truth, holding a promise, or straight up lying.

The ability to replay the episode and redo the decisions and choices you made. To see how the Fable world interacts towards you. You can be the big bad wolf that everyone fears, or the bigby, the wolf trying to redeem his past. It is really up to you! Telltale games created this game wanting to give the player the choice and the consequences that follow up with each one.

Lack of Profound Relationship

As far the the game goes, it was a really great experience. One thing I did not like and it is more of a personal opinion, was the lack of character relationship that you develop as the story progresses. As you play with Bigby, it seems like most of or none of the characters are willing to give him a chance at redeeming himself from his past mistakes. Even some characters point it out to him that they fear him more than anything. Maybe his chance will come in later episodes of the series.

Short amount of Time to Make Decisions

We already know that the time limit on choosing a dialogue or decision to respond goes by quick, very quick. So you got to be paying attention to the conversation before you get to that point or your chance to score some points with a Fable character will go out the window.

The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 “Faith” Review

Episode 1, really kicked off the series with an interesting twist. The Walking Dead started it all for them, how well players will take the interactive choice and decisions they make and how well they play through the game. I would highly recommend the game, whether you already know about the Fable comics or just a newcomer. At some point the game will tie to the beginning where the comic series starts.

The Wolf Among Us: Episode One, titled “Faith,” is available now for PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PS3. The episode costs $4.99, with the full season order costing just $19.99.
